How to Read Your Date’s Body Language

Read Your Date

Dating is full of surprises; that nervous anticipation as you wonder whether your first date will lead onto a second is part of the excitement of being single. But you don’t need to wait until after your date to know what he or she is thinking. In fact, you can usually figure out whether they like you by looking out for tell-tale signs during the date itself.
To help you master the art of the unspoken, here are a few tips on how to read your date’s body language.

All in the Eyes

It may sound cliché to say that eyes are the windows to the soul, but you can tell a lot about a person’s feelings towards you by paying attention to their eyes. If their gaze is transfixed on your eyes or lips, they are clearly listening to what you have to say, and interested in the conversation. However, if they keep avoiding eye contact, glancing at the ceiling or looking around the room, it could be a sign that they would rather be somewhere else.

The Laws of Attraction

When you’re really attracted to someone, it’s natural to want to get closer. So if they are leaning in close to listen, whispering in your ear, brushing your hand or knocking knees ‘accidentally’, take it as a complement. On the same note, pay attention to how they say goodbye at the end of the date. A handshake or wave could be bad news, but if they go in for a hug or a peck on the cheek, it could indicate that a second date is on the cards.

Physical Signs

Our actions and body language can say a lot about how we’re feeling, so watch out for hand gestures and physical signs that will help you figure out their thoughts. For example, if he or she seems to mirror your expressions and gestures, it means they are subconsciously imitating you, which suggests you’ve made a good impression. Meanwhile, fiddling with hair, clothes and jewellery often indicates that the person sat opposite cares what you think about their appearance…

Watch their Reactions

It may be easy to mask emotions for a while, but over the course of a date you should be able to gauge if they are enjoying your company. Do they burst out laughing when you say something funny, or make a forced giggle? How about when you pay him or her a complement? Log their reactions to get a feel for how well the date is going, and what your date thinks about you.

Reading body language is rarely black and white, but when you stay alert and look out for tell-tale signs, it’s usually possible to detect their feelings beneath eye contact, gestures and reactions.
